Remembering Dr Cara Levey

Scholarship and Legacy

Dr Cara Levey was a distinguished scholar of Latin American Studies whose research made important contributions to the study of historical memory, human rights, political violence and transitional justice. Her work focused particularly on Argentina and Uruguay, exploring the enduring legacies of military dictatorships and the ways in which individuals and communities confront histories of repression, displacement and exile.

Her academic research examined the experiences of children born in captivity during Uruguay's dictatorship, the memories of second-generation Argentine and Uruguayan exiles, and the relationship between theatre, cultural production and collective memory in the Southern Cone.

Based at University College Cork, Ireland, Dr Levey contributed to international scholarly conversations on memory, human rights and the legacies of authoritarianism. Her publications and collaborations brought together perspectives from Latin American Studies, cultural studies and memory studies.

Her academic legacy continues through her research, publications and the scholars and communities whose work she influenced.

The Cara Levey Academic Enhancement Award honours her memory by supporting the research and professional development of WISPS members.
